The White Sox Sign Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on an Substantial Two-Year Deal.
In a significant move for their overhauling roster, the South Side team have welcomed infielder Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract with the power-hitting player.
Deal Structure and Incentives
The deal includes a substantial signing bonus, issued within 30 days, combined with compensation of sixteen million for the next season and seventeen million for the 2027 year.
Importantly, Murakami's compensation can increase based on performance achievements in 2026:
- $1 million for winning the Most Valuable Player award.
- $500K for finishing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
- A quarter-million for ranking fourth through 10th.
- Another $250,000 for earning the Rookie of the Year honor.
The contract includes that he will not be optioned to the minor leagues without his permission and grants him a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the deal. Further benefits include a club-supplied interpreter and airfare between the U.S. and Japan.
Transfer Payment and Franchise History
As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a compensation payment of roughly $6.58 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's professional league. The Yakult organization get a 15% cut of fifteen percent triggered performance bonuses.
Murakami will become the fourth Japanese to represent the Chicago franchise, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami during their time in Japan.

Having earned Central League MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is famous for a historic 2022 season where he belted 56 homers, breaking the single-season record for a NPB hitter previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to secure Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.
His most recent NPB campaign was limited to 56 games due to an muscle issue. Even with striking out 64 times, he batted .273 with 22 home runs and 47 driven in.
Over his eight-year tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBI, and 977 Ks in 892 contests. Initially playing primarily at first, he has more recently played to third.
International Pedigree
Murakami's big-game performance were on global view during the 2023 WBC. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he delivered a victory-sealing double that scored Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a thrilling one-run win. The very next day in the final against the Team USA, he hit a game-tying home run in the second inning, helping Japan's subsequent title triumph.
