Heat and Trail Blazers Earn Initial Wins Following Player Arrests
Miami put up eighty-six opening half scores versus the Grizzlies
The Heat secured a decisive 146 to 114 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in their first basketball match since player Rozier was arrested for alleged unlawful gambling.
Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was also detained in connection with a broad FBI investigation into sports betting. Both men deny the allegations.
However, the Miami team were focused as they put up eighty-six opening half scores to lead Memphis by thirty-nine at halftime, the largest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37 year existence.
Adebayo top-scored with 24 scores and afterwards said Terry had the team's full backing.
"We stand behind him. Full support," Bam said. "We are with him all the way. He's like family at the end of the day."
Miami head coach Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is somebody who is important to everyone. He's had a real positive impact on our team.
"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he goes through this."
Portland also won their first game after the detentions, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter taking over as interim coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and leading the squad to a decisive 139-119 win against the Warriors.
"Everyone experienced positive times with Billups and how he coached," Tiago said. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but our focus is on the game."
League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' over Recent Events
Speaking about the detentions for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he was "very upset" by the events of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the league and supporters than the integrity of the game," he informed a broadcaster. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."
Silver also said an NBA investigation into the player's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he played for the Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"We were informed by the authorities and the gambling firms," he continued.
"We investigated that situation and were very transparent regarding it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, found no evidence.
"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the NBA can't do.
"Therefore, we've been cooperating since then. And, of course, what they announced yesterday was an indictment.
"Moreover two and a half years later, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in justice to Terry.
"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
