Bellingham Must Eliminate the Petulance to Reclaim a Star Place With Manager Thomas Tuchel.
Should Bellingham hopes to earn his place into the English best starting eleven, the smart move to cut out the dramatics. His response upon realizing that he was going up following a night of inconsistency in Tirana fell short of expectations.
"I don’t want to make more out of it but I stick to my words 'attitude matters' and respect for the squad members who substitute on," Tuchel said. "Choices are taken and you have to accept it as a player."
Bellingham has to learn. It was unnecessary for a strop. The captain had just put the national team two goals ahead in a meaningless qualifier, the game had six minutes to go and Bellingham, who had not played particularly well, received a caution for bringing down Armando Broja. This was hardly a questionable change. Actually it would have been foolish for the head coach to not substitute him because it was possible the midfielder would be suspended of the first match of the tournament by picking up a another booking.
Shifting Focus to Himself
But Bellingham made himself the center of attention. There was no disguising the player's disappointment when he clocked that he was going to make way for Morgan Rogers. His arms went up in exasperation and even though he shook Tuchel’s hand while heading to the touchline there was no doubt that the manager did not appreciate it.
This represents the hurdle that Bellingham must overcome. He praised Marcus Rashford for sending in the ball for Kane to score his second goal, but everything else was self-defeating. It is not as if complaining was going to reverse the substitution. The German has talked so much about honoring the team structure and the importance of showing proper conduct.
In the Spotlight
Bellingham, omitted from last month’s squad, is being watched carefully upon his return to the squad this month. Practically his place has been in question and his actions haven't benefited him by reacting to being taken off as England wrapped up a perfect qualifying campaign by seeing off a tough opposition from the Albanian team.
The Coach's Plan
This implies the jury is out on if the squad operate most effectively including Bellingham. The performance was inconclusive. Some new ideas were tested from the manager at the start. Under him, England have gained the squad a clear system over the past few matches, employing a No 6, a central midfielder, a playmaker and dedicated wide players, but there was a different feel versus Albania. The young defender was given his first cap, Wharton made his first start for England and the use of the defender as an auxiliary midfielder gave a faint echo to the Manchester club's 2023 treble winners.
A Game of Two Halves
Bellingham had ups and downs. He set up a shot for his teammate during the second half but often looked trying too hard. Several hurried and errant passes. There was a needless bit of aggro with a rival player early on. England were ragged after halftime. A scoring chance for the opponents came after Bellingham squandered possession. His caution occurred when he was dispossessed to Broja and committed a foul on the attacker.
Substitutes Decide
Ultimately the squad's strength made the difference. The coach brought on the Manchester City player, who seemed more comfortable to the position that Bellingham had played during the first half, and Bukayo Saka. Eventually Saka provided a corner kick for the captain to score the first goal. It was a reminder that dead-ball situations are going to be vital in the upcoming tournament.
Relationship Not Broken
However, the focus was on Bellingham. The excellence of Rashford’s assist for Kane’s header was partly forgotten in the ridiculousness of the player change. When the match concluded, the focus was on the midfielder. Tuchel walked up from behind and pushed the player in the direction of the away supporters. Their connection is not damaged. The coach isn't ready to give up on the player just yet. However, whether Tuchel is inclined to give him a starring role is not guaranteed.
