A Tragic Transformation Only 12 Months Has Brought in the US
One year ago, the environment was entirely separate. Before the national election, considerate citizens could admit America's significant faults – its injustices and imbalance – yet they could still perceive it as the US. A democracy. A land where the rule of law carried weight. A nation guided by a respectable and upright official, even with his advanced age and increasing frailty.
These days, in late October 2025, countless Americans barely recognize the nation we reside in. Persons believed to be unauthorized foreigners are collected and forced into vehicles, occasionally refused legal rights. The East Wing of the presidential residence – is undergoing demolition for an obscene event space. Donald Trump is targeting his adversaries or alleged foes and demanding legal authorities surrender an enormous amount of citizen dollars. Armed military personnel are dispatched across metropolitan centers under fabricated reasons. The Pentagon, renamed the War Department, has – in effect – liberated itself of routine media oversight as it spends possibly reaching almost one trillion dollars from citizen taxes. Colleges, legal practices, media outlets are yielding under the president’s threats, and billionaires are treated like members of the royal family.
“The United States, just months before its 250-year mark as the planet's foremost free society, has crossed the brink into authoritarianism and extremism,” a noted author, stated this past summer. “Finally, more quickly than I imagined possible, it transpired in America.”
Every morning starts with fresh terrors. It is difficult to grasp – and painful to realize – how severely declined our nation is, and the rapid pace with which it occurred.
Nevertheless, we understand that the leader was duly elected. Following his highly troubling previous administration and despite the cautions that came with the awareness of the conservative plan – even after Trump himself declared plainly he would act as an autocrat just on day one – enough Americans chose him over the other candidate.
As terrifying as the present situation is, it's more frightening to recognize that we’re only nine months into this presidential term. How will an additional three years of this downfall find us? And suppose that timeframe turns into something even longer, since there is not anyone to restrain this president from opting that a third term is required, possibly for security concerns?
Granted, all is not lost. We will have legislative votes next year which might bring a different political equilibrium, in case Democrats regain one or both houses of parliament. We have public servants who are trying to apply a degree of oversight, such as Democratic congressmen currently starting a probe regarding the effort to fund seizure from the justice department.
And a leadership election in 2028 could begin us down the road toward restoration exactly as the previous vote placed us on this regrettable path.
We see numerous residents protesting in the streets across municipalities, as they did recently during anti-authority protests.
An ex-cabinet member, commented this week that “the dormant powerhouse of the nation is awakening”, just as it did following the Red Scare in the 1950s or throughout the Vietnam war protests or in the Nixon controversy.
On those occasions, the unstable nation eventually was righted.
The author states he knows the indicators of that awakening and observes it occurring at present. As support, he references the widespread marches, the broad, cross-party resistance regarding a personality's dismissal and the almost universal defiance by media to accept military mandates they report only what is sanctioned.
“The sleeping giant perpetually exists dormant before some venality becomes so noxious, an specific act so disrespectful of societal benefit, specific cruelty so noisy, that the giant has no choice other than to stir.”
It's a hopeful perspective, and I value his knowledgeable stance. Possibly he may turn out correct.
In the meantime, the big questions remain: will the nation regain its footing? Can it reclaim its position globally and its adherence to legal principles?
Or do we need to admit that the national endeavor worked for a while, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?
My pessimistic brain suggests that the final scenario is correct; that everything could be gone. My optimistic spirit, nevertheless, advises me that we need to strive, by any means available.
Personally, as a media critic, that involves encouraging reporters to live up, more completely, to their purpose of overseeing leadership. For different individuals, it might involve participating in congressional campaigns, or coordinating protests, or developing approaches to protect voting rights.
Under twelve months back, we were in a very different place. A year from now? Or after another term? The fact is, we are uncertain. Our sole course is try to persevere.
